about
background info
Furniture, cabinetry and custom millwork are the specialties of J. Blok Studios, a small family owned business based in Kalamazoo, MI. Inspired by generations of family wood artisans founder Jacob Blok realizes that masterpieces are born, not made. He embraces the exciting challenge of merging the traditional building techniques and the beauty of natural wood to craft custom pieces that are as much art as functional. Together with his wife, Rachael, Jake fashions, forms, and fits one-of-a-kind creations that sprout from creative concepts. From first pencil sketch to final assembly, unique designs come to life under the craftsmanship of J. Blok Studios.

Design Process
While we certainly utilize digital design programs hand sketches and marker renderings are our specialty. We take pride in making our sketches as much a piece of art as our designs.

Design Awards
We take pride in the fact that our designs and work have earned awards on many levels. Click here for a full list of awards.

Our Team

Rachael Blok
Rachael Blok, Jake’s wife, has worked beside him since he established J. Blok Studios. Rachael thrives on the challenge of sizing up a room, taking measurements, selecting materials and designing a space for clients. Rachael has gained her expertise through personal experience, in addition to training in Kitchen and Bath Design at Baker College. She is AKBD-certified and holds an Associate’s Degree in Interior Decorating and Design. While taking an active role in developing customer relationships, helping Jake in the shop and travelling to jobsites for behind-the-scenes details, Rachael is also the busy, full-time mother of their son, Ivan, who is already gaining hands-on experience with the fine art of custom woodworking.
Jacob Blok
Jacob Blok, a native of Kalamazoo, Michigan, established J. Blok Studios while attending Kendall College of Art & Design, where he graduated with a BFA in Furniture Design. Jake’s passion for design and woodworking has been inherited and developed through several generations, initiated by his great-grandfather who launched a family carpentry business in the 19-‘s. While owning and operating his own business, Jacob is also family and affiliate of Blok Builders Inc. When Jake is not banging around in the shop, he can be found banging on metal in his forge, growing various exotic plants, searching for birds or traveling with his wife, Rachael, their son, Ivan, and maybe even their Brittany Spaniel, Rigby.
